Why here?
Falmouth, Mass. is flanked by sound and sea. It sits on a short sag of a peninsula at the south end of the Cape’s limb-like reach into the Atlantic, bounded by the Nantucket and Vineyard Sounds to the south and Buzzards Bay to the west. The summertime population swells to 100,000, but by November every year that drops by 70%
We’re in ‘low’ season on the Cape, and beach towns in general can sometimes feel a bit uncanny out of season. As a visitor at least, there’s a sense that you’re not seeing these places at the peak of their powers.
But there are other powers at work. Winter in Falmouth strips away the sunny-day veneer of the Cape. It shows the real rhythms and beauty of this chain of interlocking sea towns running up the coast.Head down to nearby Woods Hole, and it’s quiet enough that you can hear the masts knocking together in the harbor.
Low has its own heights in Falmouth. When it’s cold and clear, you can cinch up your hood and make out the modest rise of Martha’s Vineyard across the water. You can trawl Main Street shops without squeezing sideways through aisles and toppling conch shells. You can watch the sweep of the Nobska Lighthouse beacon at night, and look for the disembodied blinks of ship lights. And feel like you were really here.

The Guilded Oyster
A very good and very literal name for this sea-inspired jewelry boutique, just off Main Street. Shop handmade pieces designed by Cape and New England artists. Very much a discovery.
The food.
Water Street Kitchen.
“We’re trying to add some dimension to the food scene here beyond just fried clams and lobster rolls,” said co-owner Molly Wilson a few years ago. “We want to make food that we ourselves want to eat, and that’s based in ingredients that have integrity.”
Much of the fare is locally sourced (including beach plums and mushrooms). Water Street also partnered with the Monterrey Bay Aquarium’s “Seafood Watch” initiative, dedicated to educating restaurant owners and customers about sustainable fishing practices.
Gallery on Main
Feels a little more like stumbling into a working artist’s studio than a staid formal gallery. It’s a place in the process of creating, with local artists in residence, and a wide cross-section of pieces that push past the usual seascape and anchor thematics.

Nobska Lighthouse
Make your own nightlife at the Nobska light. Drive up after dinner; you can park near the gate and watch the beacon cut across Buzzards Bay.
